Abstract

Objective: To celebrate and highlight the achievements of the Perioperative Care Practice Research Network (PeriOpPRN) of ACCP over the past decade, focusing on its contributions to perioperative care through education, leadership, research, and service.

Background: Established in 2014 following the recognition of a critical need for a perioperative focus within pharmacy, the PeriOpPRN has grown from an initial 12-member steering group to a network of approximately 115 clinical pharmacists and trainees. This network addresses perioperative patient care, fulfilling the professional needs of clinical pharmacists in this specialized field.

Activities and Accomplishments: The PeriOpPRN provides numerous opportunities for professional development, including leadership roles, participation in three active committees, and engagement in quarterly webinars. Key educational sessions have addressed vital topics such as bleeding and clotting balance, multimodal pain management, and perioperative emergencies.

Research collaborations have led to significant contributions, including over 175 member publications and numerous presentations. Members have played advisory roles on best practices guidelines such as the CHEST Guidelines, Aradine Labs OR Crisis Checklists, ISMP Medication Safety Best Practices, and ERAS® Society Recommendations. The PRN also supports involvement through trainee travel awards, member awards, and presentation opportunities.

Impact and Future Directions: The PeriOpPRN has significantly contributed to advancing the role of pharmacists in perioperative care, as evidenced by improved patient outcomes and enhanced clinical practices. Ongoing initiatives include expanding educational resources, fostering interdisciplinary research, and advocating for the recognition of perioperative clinical pharmacists as integral members of surgical teams. The PRN remains committed to growing its membership, enhancing engagement, and continuing to support the professional development of clinical pharmacists dedicated to perioperative care.

Conclusion: As the PeriOpPRN celebrates its 10-year anniversary, it reaffirms its commitment to advancing perioperative pharmacy practice. The network continues to provide essential resources, foster professional growth, and contribute to the overall improvement of patient care.
