Abstract
Introduction: Board certification by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) establishes a baseline competency for pharmacists providing advanced clinical services and practicing in specialty areas. The current American College of Clinical Pharmacy standards of practice for clinical pharmacists require board certification. Due to the increasing number, role, and scope of pharmacists’ practice, exposure to pharmacy board certification in the PharmD curriculum should be explored, as many students pursue careers in clinical pharmacy. However, the inclusion and extent of board certification preparation and awareness in Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programs is uncertain. We seek to evaluate board certification exposure and awareness among PharmD programs.
Research Question or Hypothesis: To what extent, if any, do PharmD programs include board certification exposure and awareness in their curriculum?
Study Design: Cross-sectional, multicenter survey.
Methods:
The primary outcome of the study is to evaluate if board certification exposure occurs in PharmD programs. Secondary outcomes are when and how board certification exposure is incorporated into PharmD programs. A 19-item survey was developed using REDCap® by academic pharmacists and distributed via email to pharmacy practice chairs, or to deans of pharmacy schools if the pharmacy practice chair could not be identified at 138 United States PharmD programs. Incomplete survey responses will be excluded. Data collected will include if board certification exposure and awareness is intentionally delivered, and if so: when is this delivered, what type of courses, and how is this delivered; and if not: does the PharmD program plan to implement this in the future and what is the respondent’s interest in future implementation/delivery. Respondents’ perceptions of board certification in PharmD programs and awareness of BPS resources for students will also be assessed. Descriptive statistics will be used to analyze the data. This study was deemed exempt by the institution’s IRB.
Results: In progress.
Conclusion: In progress.
