Abstract

Emergency Medicine Practice and Research Network; Then and Now

In August of 2008 the Emergency Medicine Practice and Research Network, the EMED PRN, was established. At its first meeting the following October, there were 30 members. Now sixteen years later, the PRN has over 900 members. The long-term vision of the PRN was to foster and support educational and research opportunities, provide mentoring and leadership training, collaboration and practice-site experience sharing. The current activities of the PRN members demonstrate the continued accomplishments of this vision. The PRN shares education through monthly journal clubs led by its Emergency Medicine PGY2 residents, webinars, and annual meeting educational sessions. Its members are active in research, having published some of the most influential emergency medicine articles and guiding practice across the country. The CODE (Collaborative Organization for the Development of Emergency Medicine Pharmacists) committee matches up members twice a year to foster mentorship and collaboration. With the help of leadership within the PRN, emergency medicine was recognized as a certified specialty by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties in 2023. Through the continued education provided by EMED PRN members, a total of 632 pharmacists have already achieved this certification, many of them ACCP EMED PRN members. The PRN has had a strong history and looks forward to further expansion within the emergency medicine specialty.
