Abstract
Introduction: To improve PharmD student preparation and competency in research, Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has a two-year faculty-mentored P3/P4 capstone research curriculum consisting of 2 didactic courses and one 6-week advanced pharmacy practice experience that culminates with a research poster presentation. A prior student survey conducted in 2023 evaluated the graduating class student learning and confidence in research methods. To date, there have been no studies reporting the impact of a research curriculum on the work roles of alumni. The objective of this study is to survey PharmD alumni from the classes of 2021, 2022, and 2023 regarding their perceived value and impact of the Capstone Research Experience (CRE) on current and prior work roles following graduation.
Research Question or Hypothesis: Do alumni find value and employ the knowledge and skills from the CRE in current and past pharmacist jobs?
Study Design: Single-center, cross-sectional survey.
Methods: An anonymous, voluntary, electronic survey was distributed via REDCap® to PharmD alumni from the classes of 2021, 2022, and 2023 (n=179). The survey asked questions related to demographics, perceptions, and outcomes.
Data Analysis: Descriptive statistics will be used to analyze the results using SPSS version 29.0.0.0.
Results: Survey data are still being collected. Full study results will be available at the time of the meeting presentation.
Conclusion: This research will report whether or not knowledge and skills obtained during the CRE extend to post-graduate employment. This could inform decisions on whether or not other PharmD programs consider curricular changes to increase research learning opportunities for their students.
