Abstract
Introduction: Patients with decreased kidney function, including acute kidney injury, acute kidney disease, and chronic kidney disease, are predisposed to medication therapy problems (MTPs). However, current literature related to MTPs is not robust in those patients, and different MTP classification systems were used, which made it difficult to understand the whole problem.
Research Question or Hypothesis: What is the extent of the literature in MTPs among adult patients with decreased kidney function?
Study Design: Scoping Review
Methods:
This scoping review will answer the following questions: Among adult patients with decreased kidney function, 1) What is the current evidence of MTPs? 2) What is the prevalence of MTPs? 3) Is there any difference in MTPs in terms of the type of kidney disease or the care setting? 4) Is there evidence describing the impact of pharmacists’ interventions against MTPs? 5) What gaps in the literature exist regarding MTPs? This scoping review included studies with adult patients with decreased kidney function investigating MTPs. However, studies only focused on post-transplant care or chemotherapy, and those that reported only one type of MTP were excluded. PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts were searched using relevant keywords. Two independent reviewers screened and extracted data, and a third reviewer resolved discrepancies. All MTPs will be re-categorized using PQA Medication Therapy Problem Categories Framework. Reporting will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR).
Results: After removing duplicates, a total of 1,919 articles, including 371 from PubMed, 1,364 from EMBASE, 56 from Cochrane Library, 99 from Web of Science, and 29 from International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, were identified. Of 1,919 articles, 423 articles were retrieved for full text screening, and 23 articles were identified for inclusion. Data collection is currently ongoing.
Conclusion: Pending.
