Saturday, October 18, 2025 from 1:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. CDT at Greenway ABCDE, 2nd Floor
Available for 1.50 hours of CPE creditActivity Number: 0217-0000-25-141-L01-PActivity Type: An Application-Based ActivityIn this clinical session, attendees will explore the latest advancements and evidence-based strategies for managing anemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD), guided by the updated 2025 KDIGO Anemia in CKD Clinical Practice Guideline. Building on the foundation of the 2012 guideline, this update integrates robust data from randomized controlled trials through April 2023, addressing advancements in diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment approaches. The discussion will provide an in-depth review of therapeutic options, including the use of iron, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), hypoxia-inducible factor–prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs), and red blood cell (RBC) transfusions. Special attention will be given to the implications of daprodustat’s recent market withdrawal and its potential place in therapy as other agents in the HIF-PHI class are under development. With the final 2025 KDIGO guideline update pending official publication, the session will also highlight practical tools such as practice points, visual aids, and policy implications, offering actionable insights for pharmacists and healthcare providers caring for both adult and pediatric CKD populations, including those on dialysis. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of the rigorous evidence review process behind the recommendations, the strengths and limitations of current data, and key areas for future research, empowering them to optimize patient outcomes in the management of anemia and CKD.
Learning Objectives1. Summarize the key updates in the 2025 KDIGO anemia guidelines.
2. Analyze the latest evidence supporting revised recommendations for anemia management in CKD, including iron therapy and erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs).
3. Discuss the clinical implications of the 2025 KDIGO guideline changes, particularly in iron supplementation and ESA use in CKD.
4. Evaluate strategies for integrating new recommendations, including HIF-PHIs and other therapies, into nephrology practice for optimized patient outcomes and monitoring techniques.
