Pain and Palliative Care PRN and Health Outcomes PRN Focus Session — Balancing Relief and Risk: Exploring the Health Outcomes of Opioid Stewardship

The Health Outcomes and Pain and Palliative Care PRNs are collaborating to investigate the impact of opioid stewardship on measurable patient outcomes. The Pain and Palliative Care PRN will detail opioid stewardship efforts including opioid tapering, naloxone and risk mitigation reviews. These methods have newly available research to support their positive effect on patient outcomes. The Health Outcomes PRN will explore the latest evidence assessing the broader impact of opioid stewardship programs on healthcare utilization and patient safety. This session will highlight key findings from recent studies, including the impact on medication safety, health outcomes, and healthcare costs.

Learning Objectives

1. Outline the current incidence of pain and opioid epidemic landscape.

2. Discuss opioid risk mitigation strategies including opioid tapering.

3. Discuss current literature on opioid tapering as applicable to patient cases.

4. Review the impact of opioid stewardship initiatives on health outcomes.

5. Outline the effectiveness of opioid risk mitigation strategies in improving patient safety.
