This session is being recorded.
Learn MoreAvailable for 1.50 hours of CPE creditActivity Number: 0204-9999-25-260-L01-PActivity Type: An Application-Based ActivityThis session will review the aspects of procedural sedation and commonly used agents for both sedation and analgesia. It will provide a background discussion on the different depths of sedation targets and monitoring parameters, as well as a brief review of existing clinical policies and position papers as they relate to procedural sedation (e.g., American College of Emergency Physicians). It will also review the documented adverse events (e.g., laryngospasm, aspiration, intubation) that can occur as they relate to pharmacotherapy considerations. Relevant pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic considerations of the various agents in both adults and pediatrics will be reviewed as well the advantages and disadvantages of different routes of administration, including intranasal, nebulized, intramuscular, and sublingual.
This activity is approved for Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacy Specialist (BCPPS), Board Certified Critical Care Pharmacist (BCCCP), and Board Certified Emergency Medicine Pharmacist (BCEMP) recertification credit.
The BCPPS/BCCCP/BCEMP Clinical Sessions are part of the professional development program for the recertification of board-certified Pediatric Pharmacy, Critical Care, or Emergency Medicine pharmacists by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties and jointly provided by ACCP and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). In order to earn the BCPPS/BCCCP/BCEMP recertification credit, participants must attend the session, claim the continuing pharmacy education credit, and pass the associated posttest. Access to the Clinical Sessions posttests will be available on December 17, 2025, at www.accp.com/myaccount to anyone who has purchased access to the BCPPS/BCCCP/BCEMP posttests. For participants who have not purchased access to the posttests, access can be purchased until 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, at the ACCP Registration Desk. The deadline to submit posttests for these sessions will be December 15, 2026.
Learning Objectives1. Evaluate current literature regarding agents used for sedation and analgesia in the setting of procedural sedation.
2. Discuss patient-specific variables that have the potential to impact the safety and efficacy of the various pharmacotherapy options used in procedural sedation.
3. Critique procedural sedation pharmacotherapy implementation strategies with the goal of optimizing pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles.
4. Recognize options for alternative routes of administration and potential considerations based on patient-specific factors.
5. Identify important components that should be included in workflows and protocols for procedural sedation (e.g., stocking atomizers for intranasal administration, antidotal therapy availability, bedside monitoring).
