Central Nervous System PRN Focus Session — Teaching an Old Drug New Tricks: Clinical Use of Ketamine Across Multiple Practice Areas

The Central Nervous System (CNS) PRN Educational Programming Committee is developing an education session focused on the use of ketamine for neurological and psychiatric conditions in multiple practice settings. The disease state topics will include depression, status epilepticus and pain management. Each speaker presentation will include: 1) discussion of pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and medical quandaries of ketamine use as it pertains to the topic(s), 2) review of clinical data related to the use of ketamine in the topic(s) and 3) evidence-based recommendations and patient care application of ketamine in these practice areas. The target audience of this session is practicing pharmacists, pharmacy residents, pharmacy students, and associated medical professionals. The purpose of this session is to deliver education for an evolving, relevant issue to enhance pharmacist understanding and readiness in application to the clinical setting.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the current and emerging literature related to the use of esketamine/ketamine in mental health, pain, and neurology, including pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic considerations and efficacy.

2. Apply available clinical evidence to determine risks and benefits of esketamine/ketamine therapy including dosing and monitoring.

3. Design a dosing and monitoring treatment regimen specific to a patient case.

4. Evaluate potential challenges and real-world considerations of esketamine/ketamine therapy in the care of patients within designated disease states.
