Tuesday, October 21, 2025 from 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. CDT at Greenway ABCDE, 2nd Floor
Available for 1.50 hours of CPE creditActivity Number: 0217-0000-25-143-L01-PActivity Type: An Application-Based ActivityThis session is focused on best practices for perioperative glucose management in patients requiring diverse and complex antihyperglycemic therapies and for those who experience stress-induced hyperglycemia without a known diagnosis of diabetes. Patients with diabetes frequently carry a high comorbidity burden, which may require multifaceted interventions within the perioperative space. These highly impactful interventions are equally important but often underutilized in hyperglycemic patients without a history of diabetes. Ensuring adequate hyperglycemic management while avoiding hypoglycemia is paramount to optimal care provision for all patients during surgical encounters within the health system. This session explores perioperative best practices for patients using oral or non-insulin injectable antihyperglycemic agents, those on insulin therapy, those who use continuous glucose monitors (CGM) with or without insulin pumps, and those not currently on any home therapy but experience surgical stress-induced hyperglycemia.
Learning Objectives1. Define hyperglycemia in the perioperative period.
2. Differentiate between treatment strategies to address glycemic management in the perioperative period.
3. Demonstrate the use of glycemic management devices, such as continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps, within the perioperative period.
4. Practice implementing management strategies for glycemic device management.
5. Apply evidence-based practices to antihyperglycemic agents in the perioperative period to enhance patient safety.
