This session will provide pertinent updates in Supportive Care for cancer, including cancer pain, cachexia, and cannabis use. The second half of this session will be devoted to end-of-life and Medical Aid-in-Dying (MAiD), which is rapidly expanding in practice in the United States. This session will cover the pharmacologic and pharmacodynamic aspects of MAiD, as well as the legal and operational implications. The audience is expected to take away practical advice for supporting their patients through cancer care, as well as talking points for the future of clinical practice in Supportive Care and end-of-life.
This activity is approved for Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist (BCOP) recertification credit.
The BCOP Clinical Sessions are part of the professional development program for the recertification of board-certified Oncology pharmacists by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties and jointly provided by ACCP and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). In order to earn BCOP recertification credit, participants must attend the session, claim the continuing pharmacy education credit, and pass the associated posttest. Access to the Clinical Sessions posttests will be available on December 16, 2026, at www.accp.com/myaccount to anyone who has purchased access to the BCOP posttests. For participants who have not purchased access to the posttests, access can be purchased until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, at the ACCP Registration Desk. The deadline to submit posttests for these sessions will be December 14, 2027.
Learning Objectives1. Apply current guideline updates in supportive care to assist cancer patients with pain management, cachexia, fatigue, and treatment-related adverse effects.
2. Provide recommendations for the use of cannabis for supportive care during cancer treatment.
3. Assess the pharmacology and pharmacodynamics of the medications used in medical aid in dying (MAiD) practice.
4. Examine the regulatory and operational aspects of MAiD practice for cancer in the United States.
