Expanding scope of practice to include state-level provider status, encouraging use of collaborative care agreements, and raising awareness about available pharmacy services that support the patients themselves continue to be relevant in clinical practice today. Organizations, such as the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS), have increased their requirements for certification to include increased involvement within the profession. The goal of this session is to discuss current and future strategies for introducing expanded roles in the setting of clinical practice, explore the available evidence promoting the understanding of legislative/regulatory framework and education in advocacy training, and discuss strategies for becoming more involved in the pharmacy profession through participation in pharmacy organizations.
Learning Objectives1. Discuss common pharmacy advocacy initiatives that promote professional advancement.
2. Review clinical scenarios involving the application of advocacy initiatives in clinical settings.
3. Identify barriers to advocacy training and education.
4. List opportunities for advancement through participation in pharmacy organizations.
5. State examples of patient care initiatives commonly seen in pharmacy practice.
6. Summarize patient- and community-level strategies to determine social determinants of health.
