Available for 1.50 hours of CPE creditActivity Number: 0217-0000-26-167-L01-PActivity Type: A Knowledge-Based ActivityThe Perioperative Care PRN Education and Research Committee will focus on Patient Blood Management (PBM) in Cardiac Surgery. PBM represents a ‘patient-centered, systemic, evidence-based approach to improve patient outcomes by managing and preserving a patient’s own blood, while promoting patient safety and empowerment’. This session will feature 3 speakers focused on proactive management of preoperative anemia and intraoperative strategies to minimize blood loss and unnecessary transfusions. Speakers will address key recommendations for effective use of anticoagulation and hemostatic pharmacotherapies and approaches to global coagulation monitoring across the adult cardiac surgery continuum. Additionally, clinical pharmacist roles and institutional strategies for stewarding blood products and pharmacotherapies will be discussed. Clinical pharmacists and pharmacy leaders involved in providing or supporting adult cardiac surgical care at the institutional level will find much value in this session.
Learning Objectives1. Define stewardship strategies of Patient Blood Management in the setting of adult cardiac surgery.
2. Review preoperative anemia screening, assessment, and optimization.
3. Explain intraprocedure heparin use, monitoring, and reversal in cardiac surgery.
4. Identify perioperative heparin resistance and heparin rebound phenomena and their management strategies.
5. Discuss evidence-based use and stewardship of hemostatic pharmacotherapies applicable to adult cardiac surgery (e.g., antifibrinolytics, factor products).
6. Outline goal-directed hemostatic resuscitation strategies and pharmacist roles after cardiac surgery.
