Pharmaceutical Industry PRN Focus Session — Collaborating Across the Divide: Clinical Pharmacy and Medical Affairs in Modern Healthcare

This session will provide an overview of the current and evolving role of medical affairs, beginning with a review of the newly published ACCP white paper and position statement on professional interactions between clinical pharmacists and the pharmaceutical industry. The first presentation will also provide a comparison of Clinical versus Industry Pharmacist competencies and capabilities. The second presentation will focus on actionable strategies to incorporate the ACCP Position Statement into practice and prevent real and perceived conflicts of interest when clinical and industry professionals collaborate. The final presentation will help clinical pharmacists understand the capabilities of medical affairs professionals to leverage resources (e.g. pharmacovigilance, RWE, AI, Digital Transformation) to better address unmet clinical and safety needs, strengthen clinical initiatives, and improve patient outcomes. The session will conclude with a 15-minute Q&A to address audience questions. 

Learning Objectives

2. ​Describe the evolution of Medical Affairs, highlighting distinct roles and capabilities of clinical pharmacists.​ 

3. ​Discuss the application of ethical and regulatory frameworks to various practice settings and real-world scenarios.​ 

4. ​Outline considerations for ethical, evidence-based collaboration between clinical pharmacist and promotional versus non-promotional industry activities.​ 

5. ​​​Describe the impact of clinical pharmacist-industry partnerships on patient care, population health, and quality improvement initiatives. 

6. ​​​Explain the practice resources available from industry partners to support clinical pharmacists and improve patient care.​​
