Available for 1.50 hours of CPE creditActivity Number: 0217-0000-26-154-L04-PActivity Type: A Knowledge-Based ActivityThe overcrowding and boarding crisis in the emergency department (ED) has only worsened since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Boarding and overcrowding places logistical and operational challenges on the healthcare team as oftentimes emergency medicine (EM) personnel, including EM clinical pharmacists, become tasked with continuing to provide care while trying to manage new ED patients. For EM clinical pharmacists, this can include clinical tasks (optimizing pharmacotherapy, titrating medications, counseling, etc) and operational tasks (order verification, medication distribution, assisting in locating missing medications, etc.) as EDs are generally not designed operationally as inpatients units are. The focus of this session will be to provide guidance from clinical EM and from administrative/operational viewpoints on ways to improve efficiencies and innovative practices to improve the care of the boarded patient.
Learning Objectives1. Describe the impact emergency department (ED) boarding and overcrowding can have on emergency medicine (EM) and pharmacy operation services.
2. Identify administrative and operational strategies to optimize the care of the boarded patient.
3. Summarize innovative practices to improve the care of the ED boarded patient.
