Available for 1.50 hours of CPE creditActivity Number: 0217-0000-26-172-L99-PActivity Type: A Knowledge-Based ActivityAs medical misinformation garners more attention in the news and on social media, pharmacists are faced with questions that they may never have encountered before. Much of this misinformation has had to do with women’s health, vaccines and gender-affirming care and includes the removal of the boxed warning on menopausal hormone therapy, acetaminophen use in pregnancy, vaccines and autism on the CDC website, and transgender care in minors. Despite pharmacists being trusted sources of health information, there is a lack of formal training or access to updated resources on how to effectively address misinformation in sensitive topics within women’s health and immunizations. This gap can lead to uncertainty in counseling patients and missed opportunities to correct misconceptions. The target audience for this session includes pharmacists and pharmacy educators who provide patient counseling, develop educational materials, or influence clinical-decision making. It will also benefit pharmacy technicians and pharmacy learners preparing to enter practice in an era of heightened misinformation. International pharmacists, pharmacy educators, and pharmacy learners may also benefit from the session as healthcare misinformation transcends countries and cultures. This session will include 3 speakers. One will cover topics in women’s health and gender-affirming care such as menopause, birth control, pregnancy, and transgender care. Another will cover common topics for community pharmacists such as adult vaccine misinformation and over-the counter misinformation. The third speaker will address building the skills to have positive conversations with patients to impact health. The goal of this session is to provide pharmacists with evidence-based information and practical tools to confidently address medical misinformation with their patients.
Learning Objectives1. Review common topics of misinformation as it relates to menopause, birth control, pregnancy, gender-affirming care, adult vaccines and over-the counter medications.
2. Describe strategies for pharmacists to address misinformation with patients on the topics of women’s health, immunizations, and over-the-counter medications within their own practice setting.
3. Identify resources and trustworthy sources of evidence-based information for both providers and our patients.
