Global Health PRN Focus Session — Pressure Under Pressure: Making Hypertension Guidelines Work in Resource-Limited Settings

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. MDT at Salt Palace Convention Center - Ballroom H

Available for 1.50 hours of CPE credit
Activity Number: 0217-0000-26-158-L01-P
Activity Type: A Knowledge-Based Activity

The 2025 AHA/ACC/AANP/AAPA/ABC/ACCP/ACPM/AGS/AMA/ASPC/NMA/PCNA/SGIM Guideline for the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults makes recommendations on best practices for the prevention and management of hypertension in adults. Yet, application of many of these recommendations are often difficult or even impossible to apply in low-resource settings. Therefore, prioritization and tiering of the most impactful interventions and medications is crucial. This session will provide a brief review of the updated guidelines, a comparison to other international guidelines (such as the 2024 ESC and 2026 NICE Hypertension Guidelines)  followed by the most common barriers faced in applying the guidelines, and solutions for mitigating these barriers as best as possible in resource limited settings.

Learning Objectives

1. Discuss contributing literature related to pharmacotherapy recommendations in the updated 2025 Hypertension Guidelines.

2. Identify population gaps in the literature utilized in the guidelines.

3. Describe barriers to guideline application in various resource limited settings.

4. Outline solutions that address barriers in guidelines application.

5. Review evidence-based care plans that address gaps in the guidelines.
