Available for 1.50 hours of CPE creditActivity Number: 0217-0000-26-146-L08-PActivity Type: An Application-Based ActivityThe Adult Medicine PRN Programming Committee presents an education session focused on the inpatient management of substance use disorders (SUDs) for the general medicine practitioner. Although SUDs are commonly encountered in general medicine settings, management is often deferred to psychiatry or addiction medicine. Specific topics will include alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, and stimulant use disorder. The target audience of this session is pharmacy personnel that practice in an inpatient setting (i.e., internal medicine, family medicine, etc.). The purpose of this session is to update and empower hospital-based adult medicine practitioners to lead the care of acute alcohol, opioid, and stimulant withdrawal and guide management of the chronic disease. This session will reframe SUDs as a core internal medicine practice so that attendees will be able to identify and manage acute withdrawal and support safe discharge. Beyond therapeutics, this session will emphasize advocacy, stigma reduction, and team education within each of these SUDs.
Learning Objectives1. Review the epidemiology, symptoms, and timelines associated with withdrawal syndromes.
2. Decide which evidence-based pharmacotherapy options to use for the management of substance use disorders.
3. Apply transitions of care principles and harm reduction strategies to support community linkages and optimize long-term recovery.
4. Advocate for appropriate SUD management in general medicine settings, emphasizing stigma reduction and team education.
