Unwritten: Writing the Next Chapter for ACCP

As I have shared throughout this year, my presidential theme, Unwritten, reflects the idea that the future of clinical pharmacy, and its impact on preventable medication-related harm, is still being written. Each of us contributes a line, a paragraph, or sometimes an entire chapter to this story through our work, leadership, and commitment to improving patient care.

ACCP is in the initial stages of an important leadership transition, a moment that naturally brings both reflection and anticipation. Leadership transitions are significant for any organization because they provide an opportunity to reflect on its history, reaffirm its mission, and thoughtfully prepare for what comes next. In many ways, these moments remind us that ACCP’s story, like our profession’s story, is still largely unwritten, with each chapter building on the strength of those who came before us.

ACCP’s mission is to improve human health by extending the frontiers of clinical pharmacy. This mission does not belong to any single leader or board; it belongs to all of us as members of this organization and this profession. At the same time, leadership matters because it helps shape how we pursue this mission. The solid foundation ACCP enjoys today reflects the dedication and leadership of many who have served before, including our retiring executive director.

The Board of Regents understands the significance of the Executive Director search and leadership transition, as well as its responsibility to the membership. Earlier this year, the board approved a structured search process designed to ensure a broad, inclusive, and objective review of both internal and external talent. This approach included posting the position, inviting applications, and engaging an executive search firm to support outreach and candidate cultivation. Together, these efforts reflect the board’s commitment to a thorough and comprehensive process that considers the highly qualified individuals interested in serving ACCP.

With the search firm in place, the search process is fully underway. A board-selected search committee composed of ACCP members will work closely with the search firm to review candidates and develop a group of finalists. The Board of Regents will then interview the finalists and select the next executive director. This process will ensure thoughtful evaluation, appropriate governance oversight, and confidentiality for candidates.

Communication is especially important during times of transition. As the search progresses, I will provide updates at appropriate milestones to keep members informed and engaged in this important process.

The future of ACCP is still being written. The success and strength of the organization today reflect the impactful leadership of our current executive director and the strong trajectory established during his tenure. Building on this momentum, the board’s decision to engage a search firm is designed to help the organization continue this trajectory by identifying an exceptional leader for ACCP’s next chapter. Leadership guides our direction, organizational stewardship ensures a solid foundation, and ultimately, our members, through their work and commitment, advance the College’s agenda. I am confident that together we will write a strong and meaningful next chapter for ACCP.
