Bratberg, Coleman, Flynn to Receive ACCP Honors

ACCP members Jeffrey Bratberg, Pharm.D., BCPS; Craig Coleman, Pharm.D.; and Jeremy Flynn, Pharm.D., BCPS, were selected by the 2008 ACCP Awards Committee to receive the College’s prestigious 2009 New Educator, New Investigator, and New Clinical Practitioner Awards, respectively. The awards will be presented in Orlando on Monday, April 27, 2009, during the Opening General Session of the 2009 International Congress on Clinical Pharmacy.

Jerfrey Bratberg, Pharm.D., BCPS

The ACCP New Educator Award is given to recognize and honor a new educator for outstanding contributions to the discipline of teaching and to the education of health care practitioners. The awardee must have been a Full Member of ACCP at the time of nomination and a member at any level for a minimum of 3 years; in addition, the awardee must have completed his/her terminal training or degree less than 6 years previously. Jeffrey P. Bratberg, Pharm.D., BCPS, is Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Rhode Island (URI). He also serves as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Brown University Medical School and Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Infectious Diseases at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Bratberg is involved in the clinical education of students in the schools of pharmacy, medicine, and nursing. His teaching evaluations consistently reflect those of an exceptionally student-centered instructor. A colleague commented in her letter of support, “I have been especially impressed by Professor Bratberg’s ability to create authentic assignments and evaluation procedures. The innovations [he] has introduced into the pharmacy curriculum take students beyond memorizing drug characteristics and applying them to formulaic case studies. . . . Professor Bratberg uses case studies, to be sure, but they tend to be more authentic representatives of the real challenges clinicians face….” He currently coordinates the infectious diseases core therapeutics course at URI, teaches an elective course on advanced infectious diseases and pulmonary diseases, and precepts students on his infectious diseases rotation.

Craig Coleman, Pharm.D.

The New Investigator Award recognizes an ACCP member who has made a major impact on an aspect of clinical pharmaceutical science. The awardee must have been a member of ACCP for more than 3 years; must have completed his/her terminal training or degree less than 6 years previously; and must have a research program with a significant publication record having a programmatic theme or an especially noteworthy single publication. Craig I. Coleman, Pharm.D., is a tenure-track assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy. Dr. Coleman’s research focuses on pharmacoeconomics and outcomes, with an emphasis on preventing cardiothoracic surgery–associated adverse events. At the time of his nomination, he had been a lead or senior author of more than 40 research abstracts, published more than 30 peer-reviewed research manuscripts, and received numerous competitive research awards, including an ACCP Research Institute Grant Award. His meat-analysis on the impact of Echinacea on common cold incidence and duration, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, was cited in major media outlets across the country, including Good Morning America, The Today Show, USA Today, CNN, and BBC News, among others. One of Dr. Coleman’s letters of support states, “I would contend that Craig is one of the most prolific young clinical pharmacy researchers in the country. Craig’s work is of the level one would expect from a much more senior scientist….” Dr. Coleman will deliver the annual New Investigator Award Lecture at 2:30 p.m. during the April 27 awards session in Orlando.

Jeremy Flynn, Pharm.D., BCPS

The New Clinical Practitioner Award honors a new clinical practitioner who has made outstanding contributions to the health of patients and/or the practice of clinical pharmacy. The awardee must have been a Full Member of ACCP at the time of nomination, as well as a member at any level for a minimum of 3 years; in addition, the awardee must have completed his/her terminal training or degree less than 6 years previously. Jeremy D. Flynn, Pharm.D., BCPS, is Critical Care Specialist in Surgical Critical Care at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science and the Department of Surgery at the University of Kentucky Colleges of Pharmacy and Medicine, respectively. His practice focuses on critical care in general and the pharmacotherapy of patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery in particular. The Chief of the University of Kentucky Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery wrote in his letter of support for Dr. Flynn’s nomination, “He has assumed a truly hands-on role and developed a very close working relationship with the cardiothoracic surgeons and staff in our intensive care unit. . . . Largely through Jeremy’s efforts, our clinical practice has flourished. The safety and use of numerous drugs is monitored on a daily basis by Jeremy and his students and countless helpful suggestions come from these sources. . . .” In 2004, his first year as a member of the pharmacy residency program faculty, Dr. Flynn received the Residency Preceptor of the Year Award from the pharmacy residents at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center for his exceptional efforts in resident teaching and mentoring. In addition, he has published and presented numerous papers as an extension of his practice that focus on improved patient outcomes in the critical care setting.
