The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) is seeking candidates for a health-policy fellowship aimed at coordinating departmental efforts to improve patient safety, including prevention of adverse drug events and health care–associated infections.

The position is based in Rockville, Maryland, in the ODPHP’s Division of Health Care Quality, which is within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), Office of the Secretary (OS), at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The OASH provides leadership to the nation on public health and science matters and communicates on these subjects to the American people. The OASH is a staff division in HHS that performs both policy and program roles and is led by the Assistant Secretary for Health (ASH), whose chief mission is promoting, protecting, and improving the nation’s health. The ODPHP has been leading the alignment of disease prevention and health promotion activities across the department for more than 30 years. Within the ODPHP, the Health Care Quality Division coordinates departmental efforts to reduce preventable adverse health care–associated conditions, most notably health care–associated infections (HAIs) and adverse drug events (ADEs). Recently, the division has undertaken research aimed at reducing racial, ethnic, and other disparities (e.g., geographical, health literacy, primary language, socioeconomic status) in preventable adverse health care–associated outcomes, including HAIs, ADEs, and 30-day readmissions.
