Best Paper Award Goes to Schillig; Best Poster Competitions Won by Petrovitch and Tice

The winner of the Best Paper Award from the 2010 ACCP Spring Practice and Research Forum was announced on Monday, April 26, 2010, during Scientific Poster Session II. The Best Paper finalists were required to give an 8- to 10-minute platform presentation and attend a question-and-answer session with the judging panel. The winner of the Best Student Poster Award was announced on Saturday, April 24, 2010, and the winner of the Best Resident and Fellow Poster Award was announced on Monday, April 26, 2010. In all, 235 abstracts were presented at the meeting. Of these, 80 were reports of original research, 42 described innovative clinical pharmacy services, 62 described original research-in-progress, and 51 were student submissions. In addition, several papers were encore presentations of work that had been presented in abstract form at other scientific meetings.

Danielle L. Tice from South Carolina College of Pharmacy-USC Campus, Columbia, South Carolina, won the Best Student Poster Award for “Pharmacy Residents’ Ability to Evaluate Medical Literature and Biostatistics.” Ms. Tice’s coauthors on the poster were P. Brandon Bookstaver, LeeAnn B. Norris, April D. Miller, and S. Scott Sutton, all from South Carolina College of Pharmacy-USC Campus. The runner-up in this category was Gelson Taube from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, for “CALU and GGCX Genotype Associations with Warfarin Dose Requirements in African Americans.” Mr. Taube’s coauthors, also from the University of Illinois at Chicago, were Nancy L. Shapiro, Edith A. Nutescu, Shitalben R. Patel, Marlos A. Viana, and Larisa H. Cavallari. The other finalists in this category were Yana Blekhman from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, Illinois; Genesis S. Sezate from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, Iowa City, Iowa; and Benjamin W. Wunderlich from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville School of Pharmacy, Edwardsville, Illinois.

Elizabeth A. Petrovitch from Harper University Hospital, Detroit, Michigan, won the Best Resident and Fellow Poster Award for “Evaluation of the Impact of Inpatient Anticoagulation Teaching Practices on Patient Knowledge and Readmission Rates.” Dr. Petrovitch’s coauthor was Sheila M. Wilhelm, also from Harper University Hospital. The runner-up in the Best Resident and Fellow Poster Award category was Kade T. Birkeland from the Department of Veteran Affairs, West Palm Beach, Florida, for “Design and Implementation of a Pharmacist-Managed 24-Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring Service in an Outpatient Cardiology Clinic.” Dr. Birkeland’s coauthor from the Department of Veteran Affairs, West Palm Beach, Florida, was David Parra, and Dr. Birkeland’s coauthor from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, Duluth, Minnesota, was Nishi Patel. The other finalists were Emily K. Dornblaser, University of New England, Portland, Maine; Sarah M. Gadoua, Detroit Medical Center, Detroit, Michigan; Hanan S. Khreizat, Harper University Hospital, Detroit, Michigan; and Bebbyn A. Schafer, Palmetto Health, Richland, Columbia, South Carolina.

Jessica Schillig from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, won the Best Paper Award with the presentation titled “An Inpatient Pharmacist-Directed Anticoagulation Service Targeting Safe Transition of Care.” Dr. Schillig’s coauthors, also from Henry Ford Hospital, were Scott Kaatz, Michael Hudson, Gregory Krol, Edward Szandzik, and James S. Kalus. The first runner-up in the Best Paper competition was Eli N. Deal from Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri, with the presentation titled “Incidence, Diagnoses, Medication Use, and Outcomes of Patients with Class III (morbid) Obesity at a Single Academic Medical Center.” Dr. Deal’s coauthors, also from Barnes-Jewish Hospital, were James M. Hollands and Scott T. Micek.

The second runner-up in the Best Paper competition was Curtis L. Smith from Ferris State University College of Pharmacy, Lansing, Michigan, with the presentation titled “Bile and Gallbladder Tissue Concentrations of Moxifloxacin in Patients with Infectious Cholecystitis.” Dr. Smith had five coauthors from Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, and University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. Dr. Smith’s coauthors from Michigan State University were Gary E. Stein, Benjamin Mosher, Leslie Dybas, and John P. Kepros. Dr. Smith’s coauthor from the University of Florida was Charles Peloquin. The other finalists in this category were P. Brandon Bookstaver, South Carolina College of Pharmacy-USC Campus, Columbia, South Carolina; Rachna K. Chawla, Allergan, Inc., Irvine, California; J. Ashley Gunter, Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Mitra Habibi, University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, Illinois; and Carrie Molesa, Harper Hospital, Detroit, Michigan.

Each winner received a plaque and $250 to help offset travel expenses associated with attending the meeting. Serving as finalist judges for the three competitions in Charlotte were Debra Barnette, Sarah Brouse, Marcia Buck, Rachel Couchenour, Ed Foote, Rex Force, Krystal Haase, Brian Hemstreet, Brian Hodges, Alan Lau, Varsha Mehta-Bhatt, Brad Phillips, Beth Resman-Targoff, Kim Tallian, and Nancy Yunker.

The next abstract award competition will be held at the College’s 2010 Annual Meeting, October 17–20, 2010, in Austin, Texas. The deadline to submit abstracts for the Annual Meeting is June 15, 2010, for Original Research, Resident and Fellow Research-in-Progress, and Clinical Pharmacy Forum, and July 7, 2010, for Student Submissions and Late Breakers.
