The American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) is partnering with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and other US pharmacy organizations to support a national transition to race-free estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) for medication-related decision-making.
This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment to advancing accurate, consistent, and equitable approaches to assessing kidney function and optimizing medication use.
A multiorganizational consensus statement encourages the movement toward race-free eGFR as a preferred approach in medication decision-making. Although implementation will occur over time, this represents an important shift that will ultimately influence prescribing, dosing, and patient care across practice settings.
Clinical pharmacists will play a key role in supporting practice change within their institutions, collaborating with interprofessional teams, and ensuring safe and effective medication use during the transition.
At the same time, however, additional research is still needed to guide the application of newer kidney function estimation approaches in certain patient populations. ACCP remains committed to supporting ongoing evaluation and evidence development to ensure these tools are used appropriately across diverse clinical scenarios.
The consensus statement and other valuable NKF resources on this topic are available on the Pharmacy Work Group webpage. Of particular note is the Implementing Medication Decisions with eGFR (IMeD-eGFR) Community. This community is open to NKF members and nonmembers and will serve as a forum for sharing strategies and insights to advance the transition to eGFR. The first discussion is scheduled for July 16 at 4 p.m. (ET). Consider opting into the community by completing the brief form at the end of the IMeD-eGFR overview.
ACCP will continue to share updates, resources, and learning opportunities to help members stay informed and confidently integrate this change into practice.
