Residency Spotlight: The University of Iowa Health Care PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency

Program Overview

The University of Iowa Health Care PGY2 ambulatory care pharmacy program focuses on patient-centered care in a large academic health care system. It is designed to help residents build on the knowledge and skills they developed as PGY1 pharmacy residents. Working in pharmacist-managed clinics and with members of multidisciplinary health care teams, residents participate in the selection, assessment, and monitoring of patients’ drug therapy. Residents also have the opportunity to precept pharmacy students, participate in research, and engage in teaching opportunities within the college of pharmacy and medicine.

Life in Iowa City. Iowa City is a college town that always has something going on, from sporting events to musicals and comedy shows to art festivals and more! There are many restaurants and breweries, as well as outdoor recreation areas and bike trails. Iowa City is perfect for those who want to be able to get around easily, but still want to live somewhere with lots to do. There is an airport close for those who like to travel, and it’s easy to drive to just about anywhere in the Midwest!

The people. The preceptors and leadership at UIHC are welcoming and well equipped to teach residents and students. My preceptors during my PGY1 year allowed me to have autonomy, gave valuable feedback, and showed me true respect as a colleague. The large cohort of residents is an additional layer of support throughout residency. Our shared office space gives us a comforting place to eat lunch and work on projects.

The rotations. UIHC has pharmacists in many adult and pediatric clinics across the primary care and specialty areas. At the end of my PGY2 year, I will have rotated through 10 of these clinics over the course of a year. The opportunity to learn from all 13 of the pharmacists that I spend time with will undoubtedly make me a more effective and efficient pharmacist who is well prepared to work in many different areas of pharmacy.
