Pharmacologic Controversies in Rapid Sequence Intubation - BCCCP / BCEMP Credit

Rapid sequence intubation (RSI) is an emergency airway management strategy which requires support from an interdisciplinary team that includes providers, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists. Intubations can occur in a variety of settings and involve a variety of different disease states. Given the emergent nature of RSI, it is crucial to secure the airway as efficiently as possible, with choice of medications being one way to ensure intubation is performed in a safe and effective manner. This session will focus on the use of mainstay medications in RSI, induction agents and neuromuscular blocking agents, which assist with achieving first pass success.

Hot Takes on the Hot Body: Management of Drug-Induced Hyperthermia - BCEMP / BCCCP Credit

This session aims to equip pharmacists and other healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to improve outcomes and approaches in patients with drug-induced hyperthermia (DIH).  Participants will learn about the pathophysiology of select DIH syndromes, most common causes, and the clinical presentations that require rapid intervention.  The discussion will emphasize the pharmacist’s critical contributions, including identifying high-risk medications, recommending evidence-based treatments, and optimizing medication regimens to reduce recurrence.

Beyond Counting Sheep: Inhaled and Procedural Sedation in the ED and ICU - BCPPS / BCCCP / BCEMP Credit

This session will review the aspects of procedural sedation and commonly used agents for both sedation and analgesia. It will provide a background discussion on the different depths of sedation targets and monitoring parameters, as well as a brief review of existing clinical policies and position papers as they relate to procedural sedation (e.g., American College of Emergency Physicians). It will also review the documented adverse events (e.g., laryngospasm, aspiration, intubation) that can occur as they relate to pharmacotherapy considerations. Relevant pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic considerations of the various agents in both adults and pediatrics will be reviewed as well the advantages and disadvantages of different routes of administration, including intranasal, nebulized, intramuscular, and sublingual.

"Myth-Conceptions": Debunking Common Myths in Infectious Diseases - BCPPS / BCEMP Credit

In the ever-evolving field of infectious diseases, misconceptions can significantly impact clinical practices, patient outcomes, and antimicrobial stewardship. This session aims to debunk common myths and misconceptions surrounding infectious diseases, focusing on areas such as antibiotic use, diagnostic approaches, and treatment strategies. By addressing myths like the superiority of bactericidal over bacteriostatic antimicrobials, the misconception that longer duration of treatment is better than shorter duration, and the supposed inferiority of oral to IV antibiotics, we provide clinical pharmacists with evidence-based insights to improve treatment outcomes, avoid unnecessary healthcare costs, mitigate complications associated with central lines, and reduce morbidity and mortality.

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists are approved by BPS as a provider for the recertification of BCEMP.

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists are approved by BPS as a provider for the recertification of BCCCP.

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists are approved by BPS as a provider for the recertification of BCPPS.

BPS is an autonomous division of the American Pharmacists Association. To maintain its strict, independent standards for certification, BPS does NOT endorse or provide review information, preparatory courses, or study guides for board certification examinations. BPS, through its specialty councils, is responsible for specialty examination content, administration, scoring, and all other aspects of its certification programs. BPS is totally separate and distinct from ACCP. For information about BPS specialty recertification the BPS recertification process, go to: www.bpsweb.org/

To receive recertification credit, posttests must be submitted prior to the recertification posttest deadline (see above). Only completed tests are eligible for credit; no partial or incomplete tests will be processed. You may complete one or all available posttests for credit.

The passing point to earn recertification credit is based on an expert analysis of the assessment items in each posttest. Any posttest submitted before the recertification test deadline that meets this passing point will earn recertification credits. These credits will be assigned as of the date of test submission and reported within 48 hours to BPS. For statements of recertification credit, visit www.bpsweb.org.

In accordance with BPS guidelines concerning remediation for products launched in 2024 and after, posttests that do not reach the passing point for recertification credit will generate a second-chance test option. This test will automatically appear in the learner’s My Account page and will have assessment items presented in a different order. To qualify for recertification credit, the second-chance test must be submitted before the recertification deadline stated above.

The ACCP Recertification Dashboard is a free online tool that can track recertification credits as they are earned through ACCP and schedule new opportunities for credits from upcoming ACCP professional development programs. Questions regarding the number of hours required for recertification should be directed to BPS at www.bpsweb.org.

Target Audience: These recertification activities are intended for board-certified pharmacists seeking to update their knowledge and skills in:

  • Evidence-based insights to improve treatment outcomes, avoid unnecessary healthcare costs, mitigate complications associated with central lines, and reduce morbidity and mortality
  • Aspects of procedural sedation and commonly used agents for both sedation and analgesia
  • Use of mainstay medications in RSI, induction agents and neuromuscular blocking agents, which assist with achieving first pass success
  • Improve outcomes and approaches in patients with drug-induced hyperthermia (DIH)
