Session Overview

The Fundamentals of Biostatistics and Clinical Trial Design Workshop is presented by two of ACCP’s most dynamic and knowledgeable faculty, Drs. Soric and Williams. This workshop is ideal for clinical pharmacists who plan to sit for a Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) exam, or are interested in learning more about biostatistics and clinical trial design.

Program Content

The workshop is divided into two major sections:

An overview of descriptive versus interferential statistics, factors that influence errors and how to estimate sample size, and choosing the appropriate statistics test.
Observational and interventional study designs and methodologies, how to best interpret measures of association, and screenings in medicine.

Interpret key statistical results in biomedical literature, including p-values, confidence intervals, correlation coefficients, and regression outputs. Discuss the concepts of hypothesis testing and decision errors (Type I and II) and how they impact interpretation of clinical trial results. Describe the purpose and interpretation of survival analysis techniques, including Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards models, in studies with time-to-event outcomes. Differentiate the designs and structures of key studies utilized in medical publications. Interpret key study-related concepts and terms. Calculate the most important epidemiological terms associated with healthcare and research. Calculate the key terms associated with healthcare screenings.
