The management of blood pressure affects virtually all areas of clinical pharmacy practice. As such, it is critical for clinicians to be up to date on issues regarding the assessment and management of blood pressure. The need for blood pressure management across medical care environments creates an opportunity for the advancement of clinical pharmacy practice as well. Blood Pressure Disorders and Practice Management, the latest release in ACCP’s Cardiology Self-Assessment Program (CardSAP), provides evidence-based updates for pharmacists managing blood pressure related disorders and opportunities for pharmacist involvement in areas of cardiovascular care.

Faculty Panel Chair Augustus (Rob) Hough IV, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCCP
Hough

The target audience for Blood Pressure Disorders and Practice Management is board-certified cardiology pharmacy specialists caring for patients with cardiovascular diseases being treated across all care areas. Blood Pressure Disorders and Practice Management has four modules offering a total of 15.0 available continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credits. The book was developed under the leadership of Faculty Panel Chair Augustus (Rob) Hough IV, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCCP.

Chapters in the first module highlight the positive effect of pharmacist involvement in the management of hypertension and give practical guidance for the management of hypertension in special populations. The second module focuses on difficult-to-treat patients, addressing syncope and orthostatic management, as well as secondary hypertension. The third module discusses potential areas for growth in clinical pharmacy care including novel care delivery modalities and considerations in the area of cardio-oncology. Finally, the fourth module includes two unique features. The first is an interactive case highlighting critical factors associated with blood pressure assessment and emerging modalities for assessment in which clinical pharmacists can lead application. The final feature is a webcast addressing motivational interviewing to help drive adherence.

Each CardSAP release has continuing education activities that cover the most recent published data (past 3–5 years) on a specific therapeutic area or patient-care problem. This content is provided as a full-color electronic book (interactive PDF) with high-level updates designed, as appropriate to the topic, in three formats:

  • Traditional review-style chapters
  • Interactive cases (a series of webpages, each introduced by a sample case-based question)
  • Recorded webcast (PowerPoint presentation; includes PDF of the transcribed narrative)

CardSAP chapters and features are fully referenced, with clickable hyperlinks to literature compilers such as PubMed. Other links provide ready access to clinical practice guidelines, official recommendations, and patient assessment tools. Graphics focus on pivotal studies, patient care scenarios, and take-home points that can be readily integrated into clinical practice. Included with every purchase is an e-media version you can view on an e-reader, tablet, and iOS or Android smart phone.
