Adding to its reputation as the best source for new evidence-based medicine, ACCP’s Pharmacotherapy Self-Assessment Program (PSAP) now presents this important information in a variety of ways to enhance learning and take advantage of “on-the-go” technology.
The current PSAP release, Special Populations, offers 20.5 available BCPS recertification credits for posttests submitted before November 15. The book covers a wide range of population-specific diseases and disorders commonly seen in men, pregnant women, and elderly patients.
All purchasers of Special Populations receive the online book, which is visible on the My Account Page under My Online Products after signing in at www.accp.com. These PDF files can be printed out or saved to a computer. Viewed onscreen, each chapter has hypertext links that place the reader one click away from official guidelines, patient assessment tools, open-source readings, and all the research articles cited in the text.
For example, the opening chapter, “Urinary Incontinence in the Older Adult,” has links to the European Association of Urology’s 2013 guidelines on urinary incontinence and 2012 guidelines on assessment and management; the American Geriatrics Society’s Beers Criteria; the National Institutes of Health incontinence resource page; and an online bladder diary. Also included are PubMed links to the 44 recent literature sources cited in the chapter text.
Multimedia elements also enhance learning. In the chapter on benign prostatic hyperplasia, an audio file replicates a patient interview for calculating the American Urological Association Symptom Index score. The chapter on allergic rhinitis includes a video on the differences between intranasal corticosteroid formulations and provides a demonstration of proper administration, which is tested by a second video in the self-assessment questions.
Other new learning aids throughout the book include patient care scenarios, which represent the application of chapter information to real-life cases; and practice points, which summarize the content in the form of take-away messages.
Single online PSAP books start at $65 for ACCP members. The Print Package includes the online book plus a softbound one-color book ($90 for members).
