As a strategic member of the Pharmacy Health Information Technology (PHIT) Collaborative, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) plays an active role in shaping the future of interoperable health information technology, digital innovation, and pharmacist-provided patient care. ACCP members contribute their expertise across several PHIT workgroups, helping to advance national efforts that support technology-enabled, patient-centered care and optimize the pharmacist’s role within the health care team.

The PHIT Collaborative brings together pharmacy organizations and health care stakeholders to promote health information technology solutions that enhance care coordination, improve data exchange, and support the integration of pharmacists’ services within evolving health care delivery models. Through its participation, ACCP ensures that the perspectives and expertise of clinical pharmacists are represented in key discussions and resource development affecting digital health and health care interoperability.

In the Pharmacist Services Coding and Documentation (CoDo) Work Group, ACCP representatives help develop guidance to support the adoption and implementation of standardized billing and documentation codes for pharmacist-provided patient care services. The workgroup’s efforts focus on ensuring that pharmacists’ clinical contributions can be consistently documented and exchanged across health care systems in an interoperable manner. ACCP representatives serving on this workgroup include Ryan Wargo, Pharm.D., BCACP, of Legacy Health, and Christie Schumacher, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCPS, BCACP, of Midwestern University College of Pharmacy.

ACCP members also contribute to the Clinical Workflow, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Innovation (CAD) Work Group, which seeks to improve patient care across the continuum by leveraging emerging technologies and artificial intelligence within clinical workflows. The workgroup provides guidance on topics such as clinical decision support, machine learning, digital health, e-prescribing, and innovations that support the pharmacists’ patient care process. Representing ACCP on this workgroup are Alan J. Zillich, Pharm.D., FCCP, of Purdue University College of Pharmacy; Khoa Anh Nguyen, Pharm.D., of the University of Florida College of Pharmacy; and Mike Dorsch, Pharm.D., MS, FCCP, FAHA, FACC, of the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy.

Through participation in the Pharmacy Systems Interoperability Work Group, ACCP helps advance efforts related to health information exchange, qualified health information networks, interoperability, and clinical data exchange. These initiatives are critical to ensuring that pharmacists have access to the timely, comprehensive patient information needed to deliver optimal care. ACCP is represented in this workgroup by Richard H. Parrish II, RPh, PhD, FCCP, who leads as the workgroup chair.
