Residency Spotlight: PGY1/PGY2 Medication Systems and Operations Administration and Leadership Residency at UW Health

The PGY1/PGY2 Medication Systems and Operations Administration and Leadership residency (MSOAL) at UW Health presents a unique opportunity to develop and build skills in project management, technology, and leadership. The MSOAL resident will gain the ability to design and implement medication use systems that optimize quality, safety, and efficiency as well as the ability to leverage technology and automation. The residency includes the same clinical expectations as a PGY1 program and provides the unique experience of hybrid clinical/operation rotations to give residents knowledge of how medications are administered and dispensed in areas of the hospital such as the operating room (OR) and emergency department (ED). Graduates of this program are prepared to take leadership roles in pharmacy operations, medication safety, and project management.

Rotations include Inpatient Operations and Advanced Operations (four rotations total covering central pharmacy, sterile compounding, and the pharmacy distribution building), hybrid clinical/operational rotations in the ED and OR, Informatics, Clinics, Shared Services, Directing Integrated Pharmacy Services, Clinical Management, Executive Leadership, Supply Chain, Pharmaceutical Research Center, Medication Safety, Drug Policy, and four additional clinical rotations. In addition, time is built into the schedule for residents to customize rotations to their specific interests and career goals. Residents will complete two longitudinal projects that directly affect pharmacy department operations, one for each year of the residency.

In addition, the MSOAL program provides opportunities to develop leadership and professional skills through committee involvement, attendance at state and national meetings, and development of presentations for CE credit and the chance to earn an optional teaching certificate through the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy.

UW Health is a world-class academic medical center in Madison, Wisconsin. The pharmacy department is a leader within the profession of pharmacy in the areas of technology assessment, automation, information technology, regulatory compliance, and business development. In addition to the MSOAL residency, there are several other residency programs, including PGY1, Health System Administration and Leadership, Informatics, Ambulatory Care, Critical Care, Medication Use Safety and Policy, Emergency Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Pediatrics, Specialty Pharmacy, and Transplant. Residents have opportunities for learning and mentorship from experienced and enthusiastic preceptors with a diversity of specialty areas. It is an ideal setting to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to pursue your career goals.
