Throughout the 2023-2024 academic year, Long Island University (LIU) Pharmacy embarked on a purposeful journey, initiating various events to familiarize students with the expansive realm of clinical pharmacy. Within the fall semester, our principal focus was to offer students an all-encompassing exposure to the many facets intrinsic to this field.
In my capacity as the president of the LIU ACCP Student Chapter, supported by a dedicated executive board, my team and I diligently organized professional development programs. These initiatives were designed to delve into distinct domains of clinical pharmacy, including ambulatory care, research pharmacy, psychiatric pharmacy, and infectious diseases. Our events featured guest speakers, in their respective fields, imparting invaluable insights to students regarding the pivotal role of clinical pharmacists. Beyond illuminating the intricacies of each domain, these speakers offered valuable advice for students aspiring to pursue residencies or careers in clinical pharmacy. This interactive and informative approach aimed not only to broaden students’ understanding of the field, but also to provide practical guidance for their future professional endeavors.
Furthermore, these impactful events were conducted in collaboration with esteemed professional organizations, including APhA and ASHP, amplifying the scope and depth of our initiatives. The synergy achieved through such collaborations not only broadened the perspectives offered to students, but also fostered a robust network within the wider professional community. In a testament to our commitment to comprehensive education, we extended our events to the pre-pharmacy club, recognizing the importance of early exposure for their educational journey. This inclusive approach sought to provide aspiring pharmacy students with a unique and advantageous preview of the diverse opportunities awaiting them in the field, laying a solid foundation for their academic and professional growth.
During the spring semester, our emphasis has pivoted toward community service initiatives and further expansion of our clinical knowledge and skills. This dual-pronged approach reflects our commitment not only to fostering a sense of social responsibility, but also to continually enhancing the proficiency and expertise of our student body in the realm of clinical pharmacy. These endeavors aim to imbue students with a holistic understanding of their role as future health care professionals while actively contributing to the betterment of the community we serve.
In collaboration with CVS Pharmacy, the LIU Student Chapter took a significant step by organizing its first respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and shingles vaccine clinic. This event was driven by our commitment to bridging the awareness gap within the community regarding RSV/shingles treatment and vaccination. Our aim was not only to administer vaccines but also to educate the community about the importance of RSV and shingles prevention. This initiative stands as a testament to our dedication to proactive health care engagement, fostering a healthier and more informed community through collaborative efforts with trusted partners like CVS Pharmacy.
Moreover, we organized a Clinical Pharmacy Challenge, featuring questions meticulously crafted by our faculty members. This event served as a dynamic platform for students to showcase their knowledge and skills in a competitive, yet intellectually stimulating environment. The active involvement of faculty ensured the quality and relevance of the questions, contributing to the overall educational enrichment of our participants.
In addition to the Clinical Pharmacy Challenge, we curated professional development programs (PDPs) encompassing diverse themes. These included insightful sessions on pediatric pharmacy, a faculty-led panel discussing the convergence between clinical pharmacy and academia, and a focused PDP on women’s health, as well as explorations into internal medicine and the unique role of veterinary pharmacists. These thoughtfully designed programs aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of varied facets within the field, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.
