ACCP’s Self-Assessment Programs are home study series that provide clinical pharmacists with pertinent therapeutic updates to enhance their practice skills and improve patient outcomes.
PSAP has been approved by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) as a professional development activity for Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) recertification. The 2016-2018 PSAP series will provide a minimum of 40 hours annually (or 120 hours over the 3-year series ) of continuing pharmacy education credit toward BCPS recertification.

PSAP is a series of continuing education activities that cover the latest information on a specific therapeutic area. Topics are drawn from the BPS content outline for the BCPS certification examination, then the latest medical literature is reviewed for evidence-based updates to improve patient outcomes.
Pharmacists can use PSAP to develop and assess their knowledge in the science and application of pharmacotherapy. This information can be integrated into structured training programs or assist advanced-level practitioners in maintaining their clinical competence.
“I sometimes encounter a practice point or tidbit of information that is not easy to find in general references. The material rounds out my knowledge so that I appreciate the complexities of care.”
— Linda J. Chandler, Pharm.D., BCPS, Dixie Regional Medical Center, St. George, Utah
Leading the new edition are Series Editor John E. Murphy, Pharm.D., FCCP, FASHP, Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Science and Associate Dean for Academic and Professional Affairs, the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, Tucson, Arizona; and Series Editor Mary Wun-Len Lee, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCPS, Vice President and Chief Academic Officer, Pharmacy and Health Sciences Education, Midwestern University, and Professor of Pharmacy Practice, Midwestern University, Chicago College of Pharmacy, Downers Grove, Illinois.
“Improved my practice because I get to have the insight of seasoned clinical pharmacists.”
— Christopher D. Tan, Pharm.D., BCPS, Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii
Each PSAP release is an online book made up of peer-reviewed chapters that update a specific therapeutic area. To help integrate this information into practice, chapters include the following, where appropriate:
- In-text references to the latest research
- Graphics that directly relate information to clinical practice
- Full-color photographs, illustrations, and audio and video files
- Hyperlinks to assessment tools, patient resources, and the latest guidelines
- Algorithms and Practice Points (the take-home messages)
Learner self-assessment is by high-level, case-based, multiple-choice questions that test application of the material to real-world practice scenarios. Explained answers are a vital component of the learning process and include a detailed rationale for each self-assessment question with hyperlinks to citations that support optimal decision-making. For more on ACPE and BCPS credit from PSAP, see below.
“These chapters are phenomenal at giving me a great starting point for particular questions that arise in my diverse medical / trauma / surgical 32 bed ICU.”
— Shannon J. Allcron, Pharm.D., BCPS, Critical Care Pharmacy Specialist, Owensboro Heath Regional Hospital, Owensboro, Kentucky
The principal PSAP release is an online book, provided as an interactive PDF that can be saved to the desktop or printed. The latest version of Adobe Reader (available free) offers functionality such as highlighting or adding “sticky notes” to the text. Intra-document and external links connect you immediately to the information you want and need. As each book is released, the online book is automatically added to your “My Account” page on the ACCP Web site. A required posttest must be submitted within 4 months of the release date to be eligible for BCPS recertification credit.
For this new edition, the e-media version is included with any single or multi-book purchase. Perfect for “anywhere, anytime” access, the e-media allows PSAP information to be viewed on an e-reader, tablet, iOS or Android smart phone. For even greater value, all purchasers receive access to the popular PSAP Audio Companion. These MP3 recordings of the chapter text can be loaded onto an audio player, smart phone, or tablet, or burned onto an audio CD.
Print Package: For PSAP users who prefer print, a 1-color softbound book is available to supplement the online book and eBook. Delivered to your door, the print book offers all the text, graphics, and self-assessment questions but not the enhanced functionality of the online book. Print subscribers also receive the online book, e-media, and Audio Companion so that they can access the complete content.
“The books/series pushes me to read more, learn more, and remember that our field is constantly changing and evolving.”
— Kelly D Rafferty, Pharm.D., BCPS, Clinical Pharmacy Manager, Florida Hospital East Orlando

Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit
The American College of Clinical Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. The number of continuing pharmacy education contact hours earned for successfully completing a posttest varies with each PSAP module. The ACPE-approved continuing pharmacy education credit associated with each PSAP module is available for 3 years after the date of release. All PSAP releases are application-based activities.
BCPS Recertification Credit
Subscribers seeking Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) recertification credit from a PSAP module must submit the required posttest within 4 months after the book’s release. Recertification credits earned from a passing score on a PSAP module are forwarded to BPS. For statements of credit, visit www.mycpemonitor.net.
This nine-book PSAP series is designed to provide sufficient opportunity for the 120 credits needed for BCPS recertification by continuing education.
ACPE Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit
To receive ACPE continuing pharmacy education credit for a PSAP module, the posttest must be completed online and submitted within 3 years of the book’s release. ACPE continuing pharmacy education credit is awarded for posttest scores of 50% or greater. Answers to the self-assessment questions, with detailed rationale and supporting references, are made available online to subscribers after the close of the BCPS testing period.
Waiving Credit
To receive detailed answers to PSAP questions without submitting a posttest, go to “My Account” on the ACCP Web site, select the module you wish to waive, and click the “waive credit” link. You will receive a link to view the self-assessment question answers, along with detailed rationale and supporting references. By completing this process, you waive the opportunity to receive continuing pharmacy education credit for that PSAP module.
