2019 ACCP/ASHP BCACP Clinical Sessions have been approved by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties for recertification of Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacists (BCACPs). The sessions are jointly sponsored by ACCP and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

This educational series explores cutting-edge, contemporary therapeutic topics, and demonstrates scientifically sound clinical reasoning and decision-making. It employs learning activities designed to advance the participants’ skills and abilities to critically evaluate the scientific evidence and to effectively incorporate into daily practice significant findings that lead to effective and safe patient care.

The 2019 BCACP Clinical Sessions are offered in four presentations. Each presentation focuses on a different Ambulatory Care topic that is highly relevant for day-to-day practice. Topics include managing cholesterol, hypertension, and management of diabetes.

Clinical Pharmacists and BCACPs providing care to patients with cardiovascular and diabetes related issues.

At the conclusion of How Low Do You Go? Applying the 2018 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) Cholesterol Guidelines to Individual Patients the participant should be able to:

1. Compare and contrast the therapeutic goals in the 2013 and 2018 American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for management of blood cholesterol.
2. Evaluate a patient’s risk of cardiovascular disease using traditional means and taking into consideration “risk-enhancing factors”.
3. Design patient-centered cholesterol treatment plans in complex patients with dyslipidemia.

At the conclusion of JNC8 versus 2017 ACC/AHA Hypertension Guidelines: Which Should We Follow? the participant should be able to:

1. Evaluate the recommendations for management of hypertension in adults from the eighth Joint National Committee (JNC 8) and the 2017 American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines.
2. Apply the evidence-based recommendations in the current guidelines for the management of hypertension to specific patient cases, including geriatric patients.
3. In collaboration with an interprofessional team, devise pharmacotherapeutic plans for adults with hypertension based on current evidence-based guidelines and recent literature.

At the conclusion of When Life Happens: Managing Diabetes in the Older Adult Across the Continuum of Care the participant should be able to:

1. Design a treatment regimen for an older adult with diabetes mellitus taking into consideration therapeutic goals and other patient-related variables.
2. Develop a care plan for an older adult patient with diabetes mellitus who is making the transition from one geriatric care setting to another.
3. Summarize the safety and administration concerns with diabetes medications that should be communicated to patients, caregivers and related healthcare providers across the spectrum of geriatric care settings.
4. Evaluate the evidence base for the use of diabetic medications in the older adult.
5. Generate practical advice for their use of these agents in this patient population.

At the conclusion of Don't Sugar Coat It: Hot Topics in the Management of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus the participant should be able to:

1. Differentiate between the 2015 and 2018 ADA and EASD consensus guidelines for treatment strategies.
2. Critically evaluate the published literature regarding cardiovascular outcomes of medications for type 2 diabetes mellitus.
3. Critically evaluate the published literature regarding renal outcomes of medications for type 2 diabetes mellitus.
4. Interpret the potential use of non-insulin therapy for type 1 diabetes mellitus.
5. Design a treatment regimen to optimize outcomes for patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and American College of Clinical Pharmacy are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

Methods and CE Requirements

ACPE Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit
Activities consist of audio/video/PDF files, an attestation statement, and activity evaluation. To be eligible to earn ACPE continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit, participants must purchase the course, review all content and complete the attestation statement and course evaluation by October 24, 2022 to receive continuing pharmacy education credit for each activity. Attestation Statements may not be submitted more than one time.

National Association of Boards of Pharmacy - CPE Monitor Service

Provided through the collaborative efforts of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and ACPE-accredited providers, the CPE Monitor Service allows you to electronically keep track of continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credits from ACPE-accredited providers. ACPE-accredited providers, like ACCP, are responsible for transmitting this information to NABP to be stored in the CPE Monitor system. Statements of credit will be available at CPE Monitor, nabp.pharmacy/cpe-monitor-service/, within 2–3 business days after completion of this activity. To be eligible to earn BCACP recertification credit for this course you must purchase the recertification version of this course, successfully complete the course, and submit and pass the web-based posttest associated with each module by August 12, 2020. Posttests may not be submitted more than one time.

The passing point to earn BCACP recertification credit is based on an expert analysis of the assessment items in each posttest module. Any posttest submitted before the BCACP posttest deadline that meets this passing point will earn BCACP recertification credits. These credits will be assigned as of the date of test submission. All participants must have a Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) board certification credential number, BPS ID Number, and a BPS expiration date on file with ACCP for reporting purposes.
