The Beat Goes On: Updates in Atrial Fibrillation Guidelines

This presentation on the 2023 atrial fibrillation (AF) guidelines will provide clinical pharmacists with an up-to-date understanding of the latest guidance on the management of patients with atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation poses a significant challenge due to its association with increased stroke risk, heart failure, and other cardiovascular complications.<br />
There have been some notable changes to these guidelines compared to the previously established 2014 guidelines with updates in 2019. This presentation will ensure pharmacists are equipped with the latest evidence-based strategies for optimal patient care. These updated guidelines include the &quot;Top 10 Take-Home Messages.&quot; This presentation will highlight the most relevant information for ambulatory care clinicians, specifically the new classification stages of AF, the importance of early rhythm control, thromboembolism prevention, catheter ablation moving to a class 1 indication even before medication therapy in select patients, and risk factor modification and prevention.

Bone Health Updates: "Breaking" Down Literature in Special Populations for Treatments of Osteoporosis and Other Bone Disorders

Despite the devastating effects that osteoporosis can have on a patient’s quality of life, most of the data used to inform the treatment of osteoporosis has been extrapolated from studies of postmenopausal women and does not include special populations, who have a significant risk of osteoporosis-related morbidity and mortality. This session will focus on updated guidelines on osteoporosis treatment and discuss their use in specific patient populations, including men, patients with steroid-induced osteoporosis, geriatric patients, and children. Updates regarding the removal of the boxed warning for parathyroid hormone (PTH) analogs, as well as the post-marketing surveillance literature that led to the warning’s removal, are discussed, as are suggestions for moving forward with the use of PTH analogs in osteoporosis treatment.

A New Day in Diabetes Control for the Older Adult? Using Newer Medications Across the Continuum of Care

The evidence and practical considerations for the use of diabetes medications in older adults remains scant, and a true weighing of the risk-vs-benefit calculation in this population has not been elucidated, especially for those who have cognitive and functional deficits. This interactive, case-based session will follow an older adult with diabetes as they transition from being an independent, community-dwelling individual to needing additional support and moving to assisted living and long-term care. Attendees will learn appropriate goals of care for their older adult patient with diabetes, pitfalls, evidence, and appropriate use of diabetes pharmacotherapy, with a focus on the use of newer medications, as well as practical solutions for avoiding common issues when these older adults transfer from one care setting to another.

Clearing the Clouds: Navigating Smoking Cessation in Older Adults

This presentation will help the audience to navigate the numerous available tobacco cessation guidelines and position statements so they can implement routine tobacco cessation services at their clinical sites. Special focus will be on older adults with tobacco dependence. We will begin with a review of first line pharmacotherapy options for treating older adults with tobacco dependence. Current guidelines and position statements will be discussed. Then we will review the use of monotherapy versus combination pharmacotherapy for the treatment of older adults with tobacco dependence. Next the audience will design an individualized smoking cessation treatment plan for an older adult through interactive case studies. During the case studies, we will examine obstacles encountered by older adults associated with tobacco cessation and recommend solutions. Finally, we will end with a discussion on areas in which a clinical pharmacist can impact the care of older adults with tobacco.

BPS is totally separate and distinct from ACCP. For information about BPS specialty recertification the BPS recertification process, go to: www.bpsweb.org/

To receive recertification credit, posttests must be submitted prior to the recertification posttest deadline (see above). Only completed tests are eligible for credit; no partial or incomplete tests will be processed. You may complete one or all available posttests for credit.

The passing point to earn recertification credit is based on an expert analysis of the assessment items in each posttest. Any posttest submitted before the recertification test deadline that meets this passing point will earn recertification credits. These credits will be assigned as of the date of test submission and reported within 48 hours to BPS. For statements of recertification credit, visit www.bpsweb.org.

In accordance with BPS guidelines concerning remediation for products launched in 2024 and after, posttests that do not reach the passing point for recertification credit will generate a second-chance test option. This test will automatically appear in the learner’s My Account page and will have assessment items presented in a different order. To qualify for recertification credit, the second-chance test must be submitted before the recertification deadline stated above.

The ACCP Recertification Dashboard is a free online tool that can track recertification credits as they are earned through ACCP and schedule new opportunities for credits from upcoming ACCP professional development programs. Questions regarding the number of hours required for recertification should be directed to BPS at www.bpsweb.org.

Target Audience: These recertification activities are intended for the Board-Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist® (BCACP) and the Board-Certified Geriatric Pharmacist® (BCGP) and those interested in updates of atrial fibrillation guidelines, treatments for osteoporosis and bone disorders in special populations, newer antidiabetic medications, and smoking cessation in older adults.
